Crown Heights Brooklyn NY Short Profile

“My name is TJ Moses, and I’ve been living in Crown heights for approximately 26 years. You have hard working people here in Crown Heights. A variety of all kinds such as: African American, Caribbean American as well as Jewish American. There is a real mix of different cultures and different foods and different lifestyles.”

"There are many worlds and cultures in Crown Heights and somehow, they all manage to get along", says Rabbi Epstein.

Unfortunately not all those who reside in Crown Heights share this Utopian view of this particular community in Brooklyn, NY. Crown Heights is known for being the one of the oldest settlements of Black Americans in the United States. The most varied population is the Caribbean immigrants. This community is also well known for the world headquarters of the Lubavitcher Hasidim movement (a large Hasidic movement known for their hospitality, technological expertise, optimism and emphasis on religious study). More than 150,000 residents are of African descent with 70 percent being Caribbean while the remaining 30 percent were born in the United States. Lubavitcher's make up eight percent and Asians and Hispanic residents account for two percent.

Times have changed immensely and there are still certain perspectives that have yet to alter. I regret to inform that racism is very much alive in this community.

A Lubavitcher woman says: “The hardest thing for me as a mother in Crown Heights is to raise children who are not racists. Here, they are surrounded by incidents that could influence them against black people.”

An African American says: “In going to stores, I have experienced that there are individuals who, because of my color feel that I’ve come to rob them.”

  1. Crown Heights Brooklyn NY Short Profile

“My name is TJ Moses, and I’ve been living in Crown heights (CAPITALIZE 'H') for approximately 26 years. You have hard working people here in Crown Heights. A variety of all kinds such as: African American, Caribbean American as well as Jewish American. There is a real mix of different cultures and different foods and different lifestyles.”

ALRIGHT, GOOD QUOTE THOUGH I'M NOT SURE IT BELONGS RIGHT AT THE TOP OF THE PIECE. WORKS FINE IN A BLOG ENTRY, MAYBE NOT IN A MORE 'JOURNALISTIC' PIECE. WHO IS TJ MOSES? A BRIEF ID WOULD HELP.

IS PHOTO OF TJ? IF SO, WOULD BE GOOD TO NOTE THAT IN A CAPTION.

"There are many worlds and cultures in Crown Heights and somehow, they all manage to get along", says Rabbi Epstein.

ANOTHER GOOD QUOTE BUT WE NEED TO KNOW WHO THIS GUY IS.

Unfortunately not all those HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE WE TALKING ABOUT? who reside in Crown Heights share this Utopian view of this particular community in Brooklyn, NY.NEED TO SPECIFY LOCATION

NEW GRAPH: Crown Heights is known for being the one of the oldest settlements of Black Americans in the United States. ONE SENTENCE RE ESTABLISHMENT OF COMMUNITY--WHEN DID IT BEGIN? The most varied population is the Caribbean immigrants. HOW MANY? This community is also well known for the world headquarters of the Lubavitcher Hasidim movement (a large Hasidic DEFINE PLEASE movement known for their hospitality, technological expertise, optimism and emphasis on religious study). More than 150,000 residents are of African descent with 70 percent being Caribbean while the remaining 30 percent were born in the United States. HMM, MISSING PERCENTAGE FIGURE--IS IT 90%? Lubavitcher's make up eight percent and Asians and Hispanic residents account for two percent.

Times have changed immensely and OR 'BUT'? there are still certain perspectives that have yet to alter. SENTENCE TOO VAGUE. I regret to inform that racism is very much alive in this community. BE BETTER PHRASED AS 'MANY RESIDENTS SAY' INSTEAD OF 'I SAY'

A Lubavitcher woman says: “The hardest thing for me as a mother in Crown Heights is to raise children who are not racists. Here, they are surrounded by incidents that could influence them against black people.” GREAT QUOTE, REMEMBER TO PUT ATTRIBUTION IN MIDDLE OF IT RATHER THAN AT FRONT END.

An African American says: “In going to stores, I have experienced that there are individuals who, because of my color feel that I’ve come to rob them.”

OK, OVERALL A BIG IMPROVEMENT FROM YOUR FIRST DRAFT. I STILL THINK IT NEEDS A BIT MORE WRITING--THE FIRST COUPLE OF QUOTES, FOR INSTANCE, WOULD BE MORE EFFECTIVE IF SET UP BY A FEW SENTENCES WRITTEN BY YOU. DITTO WITH THE QUOTES THAT END THE PIECE.

AS FAR AS STATS GO, YOU'RE MISSING A COUPLE OF IMPORTANT ONES; OVERALL SIZE OF COMMUNITY, AND PERCENTAGE THAT IS AFRICAN AMERICAN/CARIBBEAN AMERICAN. I ALSO THINK PAST HISTORY OF RACIAL TENSION (CROWN HEIGHTS RIOTS, ETC.) IS WORTH A MENTION.

VISUALLY, MAP IS NOT QUITE THE RIGHT ONE--IT ENCOMPASSES A LOT MORE THAN THE NEIGHBORHOOD. PHOTO IS THE RIGHT ONE BUT NEEDS TO BE CREDITED.
